Renault SA is still preparing to produce nine new models in France, as it strives to reshape its domestic operations and switch to electric vehicles, and says it plans to cut 2,000 jobs at the same time.
According to the company's statement on Thursday, it is negotiating with French unions to lay off one thousand six hundred positions in the engineering department and four hundred in the support department between 2022 and 2024. The company will hire 2,500 people in the fields of data science and battery chemistry in the same time frame.
With the French state becoming Renault's largest shareholder, the company's CEO, Luca de Meo, is walking a fine line in his efforts to level the establishment. The company announced last year that it would cut 14,600 jobs globally and cut production capacity by nearly a fifth, including 4,600 in France (about 10 percent of the domestic workforce).
