Republicans block Democrats' attempt to increase stimulus check for Americans
After months of discussion, both the Democrat-dominated House of Representatives and the predominantly Republican Senate had this week approved a massive package of $ 900 billion (about $ 735 billion) corona aid measures. But outgoing President Donald Trump refuses to sign the text. He is asking Congress to increase the value of the support check from $ 600 to $ 2,000 for most Americans.
Trump also wants “wasteful and unnecessary elements” to be cut from the note.
Remarkably, it was mainly the Democrats who welcomed his message. They tried a bill to increase the stimulus check by the House of Representatives through a special procedure, which requires unanimity. But that proposal was scuttled by Republicans who want to link the higher stimulus check to savings in other areas.
Nancy Pelosi, Democratic Speaker of the House of Representatives, is disappointed. "If the president is really serious about $ 2,000 in direct payments, he should ask Republicans to stop thwarting this," she says.
