The tourism industry in Spain is getting busy during the coronavirus pandemic. The month of September was the seventh year in a row, during which they recorded a massive decline in accommodation services provided.Compared to September 2019, Spanish hotels have seen a drop in guests of up to 78%.Spain is the second most popular holiday destination in the world after France.However, according to the National Statistics Office, the number of overnight stays in local hotels fell by 71% during the first nine months of 2020 compared to the previous year.Before the pandemic, tourism generated 12% of Spain's gross domestic product and provided 2.6 million jobs.In an effort to support the sector, Spain approved a few days ago the creation of tourist corridors between the Canary and Balearic Islands and other European countries, and María Reyes, Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism, would like to extend them to other popular tourist destinations on the Spanish mainland.
Tourists entering islands from a European country where the number of coronavirus cases is a maximum of 50 per 100,000 inhabitants do not need to undergo tests in advance.
However, anyone arriving from a destination with an infection rate of more than 50 per 100,000 population will be required to submit a negative COVID-19 test less than 48 hours prior to flight.
All tourists will also be tested for the virus for free 48 hours before leaving the islands. Anyone who tests positive in the Canary and Balearic Islands will have to go into quarantine.
