State of Emergency Declared in Spain Due to Coronavirus
A state of emergency was declared in Spain due to the coronavirus. It was stated that the state of emergency would continue for 15 days.
As a result of the rapid increase in coronavirus (Covid-19) cases in Spain, the Council of Ministers convened under the chairmanship of
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. The state of emergency decision, which included some measures, including a curfew at night, was issued from the meeting.
Parliament has to approve it for the extension of the state of emergency, which is valid for 15 days under Spanish law.
Stating that the government's plan is to extend the state of emergency for about 6 months, Prime Minister Sanchez said, “We will present a motion to the parliament to extend the state of emergency until May 9. The pandemic is a state issue, we expect the support of all political groups. ''
Prime Minister Sanchez underlined that they made the decision to declare a state of emergency by taking the demands and expert opinions of 10 of the 17 autonomous administrations in the country.
Stating that the second wave of the
coronavirus (Covid-19) epidemic was very intense in Spain and the rest of Europe, Sanchez said, “The situation is very serious. We approve of the state of emergency as it is the most effective tool in combating the virus. As in the first wave, we will achieve this now.”
A state of emergency was declared before
The first state of emergency application caused by coronavirus in Spain was implemented between 14 March and 21 June. During this period, a curfew was imposed and schools, bars, restaurants and shops were closed unless the public was obliged to go to work (go to work, health or shopping).
In the country's second outbreak-induced state of emergency, the legality, sanctioning power and supervision of the measures already implemented in autonomous administrations such as Madrid, Catalonia, Navarra, Rioja, Castilla and Leon, where the incident was intense, was brought under control.
The most important measure new in the second state of emergency was the implementation of curfews across the country between 11 pm and 6 am. During these hours, circulation will be allowed only in cases of obligation such as health and work.
In addition, it was stated that permission to gather up to 6 people among family or friends would be applied throughout the country, while the state of emergency decision would not be valid only in the Canary Islands, a tourist region in the southwest of the country.
