TAB Central Union President Ziya Şahin: ''Honey Prices Will Double''

Turkey Beekeepers Central Union (TAB) President Ziya Şahin made an assessment of honey sales prices. Noting that while the producer cost of 1 kilogram of flower honey was in the 25-26 lira band last year, the costs doubled to 58-60 liras this season, Şahin stated that the wholesale prices of the producer last year were 30 TL, and this season will be at least 75-80 TL.

Increasing costs will carry honey prices up- Ziya Şahin, President of the Central Union of Beekeepers of Turkey, noted that the producer cost of 1 kilogram of flower honey last year was 25-26 TL and that they were able to sell it wholesale at 30 TL. Şahin pointed out that while the producer prices are in this way, the price of the same honey is sold at 80-90 TL on the market shelves, and underlined that the 3-fold difference should be questioned. Ziya Şahin, President of the Central Union of Beekeepers of Turkey, used the following statements in his evaluation: "25-30 percent of our beekeepers stepped back from itinerant beekeeping. This is a very dangerous signal. Why? Because he can't see ahead... One of our beekeepers makes 4-5 transplants a year. This shows that we have beekeepers who travel 20 thousand kilometers. Our transportation cost has increased 4 times. A beekeeping business that previously spent 20-30 thousand TL had to pay 100-150 thousand TL for transportation. How much honey will these people buy so that they can turnover it and find a return? Since they cannot find it and do not have such capital, 30 percent of our beekeepers have turned away from itinerant beekeeping. Therefore, this issue should be taken very seriously in the coming years. In other words, 10 thousand hectares of pine honey forests were burnt down. These should be urgently transplanted again. New honey forests are being established, but these will contribute to us beekeepers after 10-20 years. Also, some plants planted there do not replace pine honey. Pine honey is a national honey. Now, we need to vaccinate our pine honey beetle, which we call transplantation, from the places where we have it to the places where we don't have it. This should be done in the entire Aegean Region. Our Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the General Directorate of Forestry within it should decide on this. If rapid steps are not taken and this transplantation is not done, we have to wait 35 years for the burned forest areas. Turkish beekeepers cannot wait 35 years. If you produce 40 thousand tons of pine honey from these areas every year, the renovation of these areas should be started urgently. So far, no work has been done on this issue. Beekeepers cannot benefit from these 10 thousand hectares of ashes. Beekeepers in Turkey are looking forward to this work.'' https://twitter.com/BloombergHT/status/1563101496241442816 Follow Global Economic Developments on Social Media!
