Tesla plans to build a new plant in southern India
US electric car manufacturer Tesla plans to build a new plant in the South Indian state of Karnataka. This was stated on Saturday (February 13) by the local government.
"The American company Tesla will open a plant for the production of electric cars in Karnataka," the local government said in a short statement. The statement was part of a broader document in which the government pointed out the most important points of the Indian state budget for the people of Karnataka.
Last month, billionaire Elon Musk incorporated Tesla Motors India and Bangalore-based Energy Private Limited in Karnataka as its global technology companies.
A member of the local government at the time wrote on the social network Twitter, which was subsequently deleted, that Tesla would start its activities in India with the research and development department in
Bangalore.
Musk informed several times on Twitter about the arrival of his company in India. In December, he confirmed that Tesla wants to enter the Indian market in 2021.
India is trying to reduce its dependence on oil and reduce pollution, but its efforts to support electric vehicles are hampering underinvestment in manufacturing and infrastructure, such as charging stations.
India therefore plans to offer $ 4.6 billion (€ 3.80 billion) in incentives to companies in the sector to support investment.
