Tesla wants to launch a humanoid robot next year
Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced on Thursday that his company is likely to launch a prototype humanoid robot next year.
The robot called "Tesla Bot" will be designed for dangerous, repetitive or boring work that people do not like to do.
Musk, who managed to achieve a dominant position in the electric vehicle market and also took part in space racing, introduced his next goal: humanoid robots.
He wants to have the first prototype by next year. Tesla Bot will use the same technology as semi-autonomous vehicles.
The robot will be able to perform basic repetitive tasks, from fixing screws in the car to handling food in stores.
The goal is to eliminate people's needs and handle dangerous or boring work, Musk said at an online event about Tesla's progress in
artificial intelligence (AI).
"Tesla is probably the largest robotic company in the world," he said, pointing to cars that are half robots, which he said is just a step towards humanoids.
According to him, the robot will have a great impact on the economy in addressing labor shortages in some sectors. He added that it was important not to be "super expensive".
Tesla's AI Day took place at a time when US authorities were examining the safety and capabilities of an advanced Full Self-Driving system after several accidents in which Tesla cars collided with stationary police and fire engines.
Musk did not comment on the investigation, but said he was confident that cameras and computers could make autonomous cars safer than man-made vehicles.
