The aerospace company Boeing has made its sixth quarterly loss in a row
The aerospace company Boeing has made its sixth quarterly loss in a row, but expects a "turning point" in the current year. The delivery of new commercial aircraft depends on the progress made with Covid-19 vaccinations and trade relations between the US and China. China is the Group's largest single customer.
Boeing resumed deliveries of 737 Max and 787 Dreamliners during the quarter, but quality issues remain plagued. Due to problems with a supplier, the company posted a charge on its order to build new Air Force One machines for the US president. Boeing left the production plans for new machines unchanged.
In the first quarter of 2021, Boeing incurred an even higher loss than feared. As the
Airbus competitor announced, the bottom line was a loss of 561 million US dollars or 92 cents per share. That is less than a year ago with a loss of $ 641 million or $ 1.11 per share at the time. At $ 1.53 per share, the adjusted loss was significantly higher than analysts had expected on average.
Sales were largely in line with analysts' estimates, with a decline of ten percent to $ 15.22 billion. Sales in the commercial aircraft division dropped by almost a third, while the defense and space division generated almost a fifth more. Boeing continued to burn $ 3.68 billion, but free cash flow was better than expected.
In connection with the retrofitting of two 747-8s to serve as the future Air Force One, Boeing took a $ 318 million charge on the books, citing delays caused by the
pandemic and a dispute with a supplier. The group is contractually obliged to deliver two converted jumbo jets by the end of 2024, but was forced to change suppliers for some of the aircraft's interior fittings.
