The construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline was resumed after almost a year
The construction of a gas pipeline to transport gas from Russia to Germany across the Baltic Sea resumed after almost a year. Nord Stream 2 has confirmed the resumption of work for the German news agency DPA.
Work began about a week after a Russian pipeline ship arrived in a position to resume construction.
Swiss company Allseas, which operates pipeline ships, cut off work last December after US President Donald Trump signed legislation imposing sanctions on companies associated with the
Nord Stream 2 project.
The US is an outspoken opponent of this pipeline. Together with Eastern European countries, which are also rejecting the project, the US government claims that it will increase Europe's dependence on Russian energy.
The Kremlin, on the other hand, accuses
Washington of trying to stop the project in order to force European customers to buy more expensive American liquefied natural gas. Germany does not agree with the "extraterritorial sanctions" that the US is threatening.
