The cruise operator Aida cancels Mediterranean trips
The cruise operator Aida Cruises has canceled its Mediterranean trips planned for mid-May to early June due to the corona pandemic. Instead, the "Aida Perla" will make three trips around the Canary Islands from Las Palmas on Gran Canaria, the company said. It offers its Mediterranean passengers to rebook one of the Canary Islands or a later trip.
The "Aida Perla" has been sailing off the Canary Islands as the only ship in the fleet with a greatly reduced number of passengers since mid-March. For many months, they have been one of the few holiday destinations in Europe with consistently low incidence values, says the cruise company. The health and hygiene concept on board the "Aida Perla" included a PCR test before arrival, regular health checks, extensive AHA rules and medical care including test capacities on board.
The pandemic has more or less brought the cruise industry to a standstill and brought many providers into financial difficulties. Aida Cruises had interrupted its travel season because of the spread of the
corona virus last year in March and thus more than a year ago. Since then, the company has had to postpone the intended restart several times due to extended, tightened or new measures such as travel restrictions.
The US-American Aida mother Carnival had again reported a losing quarter with deep red numbers due to the problems on Wednesday, but at the same time gave hope for a strong comeback. The demand for cruises has risen sharply, and in the three months to the end of February, bookings have risen by around 90 percent compared to the previous quarter, said the Miami company. However, the cruise giant closed the first quarter with a loss of nearly two billion dollars (1.7 billion euros).
