Turkey Statistical Institute (TSI), according to information compiled from the data, in 2015 78 million 741 thousand 53 that Turkey's population, an increase of 5.6 percent as of 2019 rose to 83 million 154 thousand 997'y. In this period, the population of 76 provinces increased and 5 provinces decreased.
While Istanbul ranked first with an increase of 861 thousand 833 people, it was followed by Ankara with 368 thousand 501 people, Antalya with 223 thousand 244 people, Bursa with 213 thousand 573 people and Izmir with 198 thousand 836 people.
In the period in question, Agri was registered as the province with the largest population decline. The population of Agri decreased by 11 thousand 11 people in 5 years. This province was followed by Kars with a decrease of 7 thousand 250 people, Ardahan with 1946 people, Tunceli with 1416 people and Erzurum with 259 people.
Yalova is the leader in population growth rate
Yalova ranked first in the population growth rate, with an increase of 16.3 percent in the 2015-2019 period. In this period, the population of Yalova increased from 233 thousand 9 to 270 thousand 976. Teklova was followed by Yalova with an increase of 12.5%, Kocaeli with an increase of 9.7 and Sanliurfa with an increase of 9.6%.
In the same period, Kars's population decreased by 2.5 percent, Ağrı by 2.01 percent, Ardahan by 1.96 percent, Tunceli by 1.65 percent and Erzurum by 0.03 percent.
Migration from village to city continues
With the 2014 Local Elections, Aydin, Balikesir, Denizli, Hatay, Malatya, Manisa, Kahramanmaras, Mardin, Mugla, Tekirdag, Trabzon, Sanliurfa, Van, and Ordu gained metropolitan status, while the borders of metropolitan municipalities were also included. Thus, the villages in the metropolitan cities, which increased from 16 to 30, were also turned into neighborhoods.
When the village population in 51 cities outside the 30 metropolitan cities was examined in the 2015-2019 period, it was observed that the village population in 15 cities increased and 36 of them decreased. While the population of the villages was 6 million 217 thousand 919 people in 2015, the number of people living in the village decreased to 6 million 3 thousand 717 in 2019. Thus, the population of the village decreased by 214 thousand 202 in 5 years.
The province where the village population decreased the most was Erzincan with 38 thousand 559 people. This province was followed by Mus with a decrease of 25 thousand 981 people, Adiyaman with a decrease of 14 thousand 595 people, Aksaray with a decrease of 13 thousand 198 and Kars with a decrease of 12 thousand 850.
On the other hand, Usak, Agri, Kutahya, Nigde, Yozgat, Hakkari, Bingol, Corum, Batman, and Edirne were other major provinces where the village population decreased.
In the period in question, the province where the village population increased the most was Gümüshane with 12 thousand 423 people. Sirnak was followed by 8 thousand 7 people, Rize with 6 thousand 245 people and Cankiri with 5 thousand 762 people.
In addition, other provinces that increased the village population were registered as Yalova, Elazig, Tokat, Karabuk, Canakkale, Bolu, Kirklareli, Igdir, Kilis, Tunceli, and Bayburt.
