MEPs on Wednesday approved the appointment of Mairead McGuinness, former Vice-President of the European Parliament, as the new Irish European Commissioner, and approved a change of portfolio for European Commission Executive Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis, originally from Latvia. The changes in the EU executive came after the resignation of EU Trade Commissioner Phil Hogan, who took political responsibility for violating national provisions to combat the spread of the new coronavirus while in his native Ireland. The head of the European Commission subsequently decided to entrust the Department of Trade Policy to Dombrovskis and to assign to the Irish-nominated candidate a department for financial services, financial stability and capital markets. However, before taking office, both had to attend a "question hour" in the relevant working committees of the European Parliament, and after their recommendation on the ability to carry out the agenda entrusted to them, they also had to get enough votes in the plenary of the EU legislature.MEPs removed both nominees when McGuinness won 583 supporting votes, 75 against and 37 abstentions.Dombrovskis spoke in favor of 515 deputies, 110 against and 70 abstentions.
