The European Parliament wants to introduce a carbon tax on the imports

The European Commission should prepare a legislative proposal in the second quarter.

The European Union (EU) wants to tax certain goods imported from countries that do not sufficiently combat climate change. The European Parliament announced this on Wednesday. The legislators adopted a non-legislative resolution calling for the establishment of an EU carbon offset mechanism at the borders, in line with World Trade Organization (WTO) rules. As the European Parliament goes on to say, this measure could help to ensure a global level playing field and "motivate industry inside and outside the Union to decarbonise". Such a step could help meet the objectives of the Paris Climate Agreement. Following the adoption of this resolution, the European Commission should prepare a legislative proposal in the second quarter of 2021 to introduce a carbon tax mechanism for imports into the EU.
