The Germans consumed almost 38,000 tons more coffee at home last year
Last year, the Germans consumed more coffee than in 2019. As a result of pandemic measures and widespread work from home, people moved coffee drinking between their own four walls.
According to the German Coffee Association, last year the market grew by 1.5% year on year, which corresponds to an increase of 20 cups of coffee to a total of 168 liters per capita. "
Lockdown does not mean that the consumer has stopped drinking coffee if cafes or company canteens are closed. Rather, the place of consumption has changed at this time," Holger Preibisch, president of the association, told DPA.
According to the findings of the association, the Germans consumed 37,900 tons more roasted coffee at home last year, which corresponds to an increase of 11%. On the other hand, consumption in the workplace or in gastronomic establishments decreased by 30,300 tonnes, ie by 23%.
Along with higher coffee consumption, the Germans bought better coffee machines, almost every third household now owns a fully automatic device. This is related to a year-on-year increase in sales of whole coffee beans by 26% and this product reached a market share of 37%. With a market share of 50%, classic filtered coffee, whose sales increased by 0.2%, continues to be the most popular.
During the first
pandemic year, more other coffee variants were sold. Mixed coffee drinks in powder form increased by 7%, portioned coffee in paper bags (so-called coffee pods) by 6% and instant coffee by 5%. In addition, 4% more coffee capsules were sold, although they are considered to be environmentally problematic due to their aluminum packaging.
