The regulator will assess the Oxford vaccine, which could be deployed in December
The UK government has asked the UK Medical and Health Regulatory Authority to evaluate a coronavirus vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University, moving the UK one step closer to the possible deployment of the COVID-19 vaccine. The bbc.com website informs about it.
The request from the British government, which has already ordered 100 million doses of
Oxford vaccine, comes a week after the regulator received a request for a vaccine assessment from Pfizer and BioNTech.
Health Minister Matt Hancock said the government was "working tirelessly" to be in the "best possible position to deploy the vaccine" as soon as it was approved by the regulatory authority.
"We have formally asked the regulator to evaluate the Oxford /
AstraZeneca vaccine, understand the data and determine whether it meets strict safety standards," Hancock added, admitting that if the vaccine approved, the vaccine could begin in December.
