The Unemployment Rate In The United Kingdom Rose Sharply
The unemployment rate in the United Kingdom rose sharply in August. The country's statistical office reported that the number of unemployed people in the three months to the end of August increased by 138,000 compared to the previous three months.
Unemployment rose to 4.5 percent from 4.1 percent.
Unemployment in Britain has not yet risen as sharply as in the US thanks to the government's job retention program during the corona crisis. Approximately 1.2 million British employers took the opportunity to send employees on forced leave, during which salaries are paid by the government.
9.5 million people were included in the program and it cost the government almost £ 40 billion.
As the government support program ends at the end of October, many employees who are still on forced leave are expected to be redundant. There are therefore fears that the number of unemployed Britons could rise to three million, levels not in the country since the early 1990s.
