The United Airlines wants to avoid the airspace over Afghanistan
The American airline United Airlines is redirecting its flights to India, it wants to avoid the airspace over Afghanistan. The footsteps come after Taliban fighters occupied the capital Kabul. Some European airlines react similarly.
"Due to the ever-changing situation, we have started to reroute aircraft flying through Afghan airspace," United Airlines said in a statement.
The American carrier operates the route between the Indian capital and Newark International Airport daily, the company flies from Chicago to New Delhi five times a week, writes the CNBC server.
Among other things, it also serves a route from Newark to Mumbai. United Airlines is the only American airline that flies to India virtually non-stop. These are very long direct flights, from Newark to New Delhi the flight takes less than 14 hours.
United Airlines says it will continue to work closely with the country's Civil Aviation Authority (FAA) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA). They want to continue to evaluate the situation and determine how they will continue in the affected markets.
Already in July, the FAA banned US airlines from flying over Afghanistan's airspace below 26,000 feet (7,925 kilometers) above the ground, precisely for safety reasons.
Flydubai and Emirates also have concerns about security in the airspace over Afghanistan. They suspended flights to
Kabul. According to Emirates, purchased tickets will not be valid, passengers should contact the carrier or travel agency.
Other countries, including the United Kingdom and France, have taken similar measures. British Airways confirmed to Euronews that it "does not currently use Afghan airspace".
The French company Air
France is currently diverting flights. "Air France is constantly monitoring the current geopolitical situation in Afghanistan, as well as the territories that are served by airlines or over which planes fly," said French airlines.
"Flight plans are adjusted in real time according to the decision of the French and regional authorities to ensure the highest level of flight safety," the airlines added.
The British company Virgin Atlantic mentioned to Euronews that, given the situation in Afghanistan, it is redirecting upcoming flights so that the planes avoid airspace over Afghanistan.
