The United States will not activate tariffs on French goods
The United States will not activate tariffs on French goods planned in retaliation for the additional taxation of US technology giants in France.
This was announced on Thursday by the representative of the US government in trade negotiations Robert Lighthizer.
The report comes less than three weeks before the end of President Donald Trump's term. Raising import duties was an important part of the outgoing president's trade policy. His successor, Democrat Joe Biden, is expected to change his approach, according to the BBC.
Washington postponed the imposition of tariffs once last year after
Paris announced that it would not collect a new technology tax yet.
At the time, both governments pledged to work with other countries to reach an agreement that would regulate the taxation of technology giants at the international level. Negotiations are coordinated by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (
OECD).
From January 6, French goods, whose imports into the USA are worth USD 1.3 billion a year, were to be subject to an extraordinary duty of 25 percent.
