Tourism revenue of Turkey declined by 40 percent! Tourism revenue decreased by 40.2 percent in the first quarter compared to the previous quarter.
According to the data released by the
Turkish Statistical Institute (TURKSTAT), tourism revenue in the first quarter of the year decreased by 40.2 percent compared to the same quarter of the previous year and reached 2.5 billion dollars. After the second quarter of 2020, when the pandemic significantly reduced tourism revenues, tourism revenues were at the level of $ 4 billion in the third quarter of the year and recorded as $ 3.9 billion in the last quarter of the year.
In the first quarter of 2021, it was observed that the decrease in tourism revenues continued, depending on the course of the epidemic.
In the first quarter of the year, 68.8 percent of the tourism income was earned from foreign visitors and 31.2 percent from citizens residing abroad. In this quarter, 2 billion 296 million 854 thousand dollars of the expenditures were personal expenses and 155 million 359 thousand dollars were package tour expenditures.
Spending Increased While Income Decreased
While the decline in tourism revenues continued in the first quarter of the year, it was observed that there was an increase in per capita spending. While the per capita expenditure was recorded as 762 dollars in 2020, this figure was recorded as 943 dollars in the first quarter of 2021.
During the same period, the average overnight expenditure was 56 dollars.
Number of Visitors Increased in March
Looking at the tourist data of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, it was understood that an increase was recorded due to the base effect. According to the data, the number of tourists increased by 23.7 percent in March compared to the same period of the previous year. After 3 months, the number of tourists exceeded the limit of 1 million and reached 1.2 million.
In March,
Turkey hosted the most tourists from Russia with 219 thousand 458 visitors. Russia was followed by Iran and Germany.
In the first quarter of 2021, Turkey hosted a total of 2 million 689 thousand 986 visitors.
