Turkey's Electricity Consumption Increased in December
In December, Turkey's electricity
consumption increased. Electricity consumption increased by 3 percent in December compared to the same month of the previous year.
According to information obtained from data released by the
Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, the highest electricity consumption on a daily basis last month in Turkey was recorded as 903 million 603 thousand kilowatt-hours on December 22, and the lowest consumption was recorded as 729 million 667 thousand kilowatt-hours on December 6.
In December, electricity consumption reached 26 billion 268 million 380 thousand kilowatt-hours with an increase of 3 percent compared to the same month of 2019, and production was recorded as 26 billion 571 million 537 thousand kilowatt-hours with an increase of 4.6 percent.
Spending more time at home and continuing industrial production due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) epidemic was reflected in an increase in electricity consumption.
14.8 percent of the electricity production was obtained from hydroelectric power plants, 33.2 percent from natural gas power plants and 22.5 percent from imported coal plants. While the share of wind energy in production was 9 percent, the share of domestic coal power plants was recorded as 15.1 percent. The remainder was supplied from geothermal, solar, fuel oil and biomass resources.
Decrease in Electricity Imports
Turkey's electricity imports in this period recorded 88.3 percent decrease compared to the same month of the previous year and declined to 299 million 486 thousand kWh from 34 million 979 thousand kilowatt.
In the said period, electricity exports increased by 78.7 percent and reached 338 million 135 thousand kilowatt-hours. In December 2019, 189 million 181 thousand kilowatt-hours of electricity was exported.
