Ukraine's Zelensky warns Europeans to prepare for a bleak winter
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Europeans face a difficult winter as Russian aggression against his country has led to disruptions in Moscow's oil and gas exports.
Zelensky spoke after Moscow on Saturday night shut down the main pipeline supplying Russian gas to the continent.
"Russia is preparing a decisive energy blow to all Europeans for this winter," Zelensky said in his daily video address.
Moscow blamed technical problems and Western sanctions imposed over its invasion of Ukraine for the energy disruptions. European countries, which provide diplomatic and military support to the Kiev government, accuse Russia of weaponizing its energy resources.
Some analysts say shortages and the cost of living as winter approaches risk eroding Western support for Kiev as governments try to cope with a disgruntled population.
Last week Moscow said it would keep the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, the main gas conduit to Germany, closed and the G7 countries announced a planned price cap on Russian oil exports.
The Kremlin said it would halt oil sales to countries that imposed the cap.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Sunday that his government planned to completely halt gas shipments in December but promised his country would survive the winter.
"Russia is no longer a reliable energy partner," Scholz told a news conference in Berlin.
