Unemployment in Turkey Announced as 13.1 Percent in March

Turkish Statistics Institute(TURKSTAT) shared labor force statistics for March. Accordingly, unemployment was recorded as 13.1 percent in March.

Unemployment in Turkey was announced as 13.1 percent in March. Turkish Statistics Institute (TURKSTAT) shared the labor force statistics for March with the public. According to the said lows, unemployment was announced as 13.1 percent in March, while the idle power rate, which is considered as an indicator for broadly defined unemployment, was recorded as 25.8 percent. During the coronavirus epidemic, layoffs were banned, but unemployment increased due to restrictions, according to the data released by TURKSTAT, in Turkey, the number of unemployed people aged 15 and over increased by 59 thousand people in March 2021 compared to the previous month, reaching 4 million 236 thousand people. The youth unemployment rate for the 15-24 age group was 25 percent with a 0.7 percentage point decrease compared to the previous month, and the employment rate was 31.4 percent with a 1.4 percentage point increase. The labor force participation rate in the said age group increased by 1.5 points compared to the previous month and was recorded as 41.9 percent. Non-agricultural unemployment rate was 14.9 percent in March. The workforce increased by 610 thousand people in March 2021 compared to the previous month, and the labor force participation rate was announced as 51.0 percent with an increase of 0.9 points.

Broadly Defined Unemployment Indicators Decreased

The rate of idle workforce consisting of time-dependent underemployment, potential workforce and the unemployed was 25.8 percent in March this year, down 2.3 points compared to the previous month. The integrated rate of time-related underemployment and unemployed was recorded as 18.2 percent, while the integrated rate of potential labor force and unemployed was 21.2 percent.

29 of every 100 Employees are Unrecorded

In March, the rate of unregistered employees, which showed the share of employees who are not affiliated to the social security organization, in the total employees, was recorded as 28.9 percent, with an increase of 0.4 points compared to March 2020. The ratio of informal workers in the non-agricultural sector decreased by 1.2 points compared to the same month of the previous year and was realized as 17.8 percent.
