The USA signed an energy agreement with Iraq. Five companies, including Chevron, signed an agreement with the Iraqi government on Wednesday to strengthen Iraq's energy independence from Iran.
The USA signed an 8 billion dollar energy agreement with Iraq. In the statement released by the US Department of Energy, it was stated that Honeywell International, Baker Hughes, General Electric, Stellar Energy and Chevron signed an oil and electricity agreement worth 8 billion dollars with the Iraqi government.
The Iraqi economy, struggling with the coronavirus epidemic and low oil prices, has begun preparations to make its first visit to the US President Mustafa al-Kadhimi White House.
"This agreement plays a key role in the future of Iraqi energy and I am sure that companies that contribute to the US energy independence will help the energy sector discover its potential by using their expertise in this area to help Iraq," US Energy Minister Dan Brouillette said.
The agreement was signed after the meeting of Brouillette with Iraqi oil and electricity ministers and a roundtable between the Iraqi Prime Minister and the energy sector in Washington.
According to Reuters, a senior official who made a separate statement to reporters prior to the statement made by the Energy Ministry, stated that the officials at the meeting could discuss national security issues as well as economic cooperation.
