Will Dogecoin Become an Official Payment Method in California?
Everyone's favorite crypto dog is back and may well be on its way to becoming an official currency in California. If he wins the US Senate election, Democratic Party member Timothy Ursich Jr. has pledged to draft a bill proposing Dogecoin as an Official Payment Method.
Aim To Draw Attention To Cryptocurrencies
As the world moves closer to adopting cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin (BTC) is the only digital currency ever used as an official payment method. However, to date, only El Salvador and the Central African Republic accept Bitcoin as currency.
Ursich Jr. In a recent tweet, promised to draft a bid for Dogecoin to be used as an official currency, this appears to be part of the election campaign to gain support for the vote to be held on the 7th of June.
Shout out to @BillyM2k and @elonmusk in support of my US Senate campaign in California.
As I stated weeks ago, if I am elected on June 7, I will draft a bill proposing #Dogecoin as an official payment method. I will work towards mass adoption of #cryptocurrency through its universal use.

Apart from the move to create hype around the election pressure by pinging Elon Musk in the process, this political show of power draws attention to cryptocurrencies. Ursich Jr states on his website that “the adoption of cryptocurrency by our government will provide an opportunity to narrow existing wealth gaps, something that has been debated by American citizens for decades.” The Senate candidate does not forget to stress the importance of establishing a regulatory framework to prevent bad-players from exploiting the crypto market.
Created by Jackson Palmer and Billy Markus, the memecoin was one of the stars of 2021 as it hit an all-time high of $0.70 in just a few months. Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) CEO Elon Musk, affectionately called the “Dogefather” by the cryptocurrency community, partially fueled the hype around the cryptocurrency.
Last April,
Elon Musk promised SpaceX would "put a real Dogecoin on the real Moon." Shortly after the announcement, the USD value of memecoin rose 35%. Musk criticized Bitcoin and Ethereum for making slow and expensive transactions and instead chose to support DOGE, claiming it could minimize fees and provide faster payment speeds. Musk also revealed that he invested his own fortune in dogecoin.
At the beginning of 2022, Musk and Dogecoin were on the agenda again, this time encouraging McDonald's to integrate DOGE as a form of payment. To encourage the fast food giant to adopt the memecoin, Musk promised to have a live Happy Meal on TV. Just a few days ago, DOGE's price rose 15% after Tesla CEO tweeted that SpaceX would soon adopt memecoin as a means of payment for merchandise.
