World trade in goods has recovered, but the end of this year appears to be slowing
World trade in goods recovered in the third quarter, but the end of this year appears to be slowing.
This is assumed by the World Trade Organization (
WTO).
As the WTO reported, its barometer of trade in goods rose to 100.7 points in the third quarter from a previous historical low of 84.5 points.
The barometer value for the second quarter, published in August, was the lowest since 2007, when the WTO began publishing the relevant data. As the organization added, the growth in export orders in particular contributed to the recovery in the third quarter.
"Recent data suggest a strong recovery in trade in the third quarter following the end of quarantine measures, but growth is likely to slow in the fourth quarter," the WTO said.
According to the organization, the outlook for trade is uncertain, as markets in Europe and North America have been hit by a second wave of a new
coronavirus pandemic, which could lead to further business closures.
