WTO Is Set To Approve European Union Tariffs On The US Goods
The World Trade Organization (WTO) is set to approve European Union (EU) tariffs of around $ 4 billion (€ 3.42 billion) on imports of goods and services from the US over a long-running dispute over subsidies for aircraft manufacturers.
This was stated by the AFP agency with reference to the Bloomberg report.
According to a source familiar with the matter, who asked for anonymity, the resulting amount is likely to be "slightly smaller" than reported by the media. The decision should be announced on October 13, the source added.
"We regret that the confidentiality of the process has been violated," a European Commission spokesman said. He recalled that WTO decision-making has not yet been completed and is not yet public. The WTO, Airbus and Boeing did not respond to AFP's questions.
The EU and the US accuse each other of providing illegal state aid to their aircraft manufacturers.
Last year, the WTO approved US tariffs on EU goods and services of $ 7.5 billion in subsidies to European aircraft manufacturer Airbus. This was the highest amount the WTO has ever allowed. The EU wants to introduce tariffs on imports from the US for subsidies for Boeing.
The next WTO ruling on the subsidy dispute, if announced in mid-October, should come just weeks before the US presidential election, in which international trade relations play an important role.
When the WTO approved US sanctions against the EU last year, the United States imposed 15 percent tariffs on aircraft imported from the EU and 25 percent tariffs on products such as wine, cheese, olives and olive oil.
