While Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said that they condemned Russia's invasion of Ukraine, he stated that they would remove Russia from the status of "most favored country" and impose additional sanctions.
Prime Minister Kishida described Russia's war on Ukraine as inhumane. After the invasion order of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Kishida said, "Do we want an international order based on universal values such as freedom, democracy, and the rule of law? Or the one based on the law of power and tolerating the change of the status quo?"
Expressing that they stand by Ukraine without bowing to the threats of Russia, the Prime Minister said, "As an importer of energy and food products, the effects on the economy are alarming, but we will not surrender to the threats of Russia and we will show our solidarity with the Ukrainian people for peace."
Based on the news published by the Japanese press, it was stated that Prime Minister Fumio Kishida will announce the decision to the public as soon as possible, and that Russia will be subject to higher import duties after the said measure.
After Russia's invasion of Ukraine, many trade sanctions were imposed on Moscow by the countries of the world, and Japan made an export restriction move to Russia for semiconductors and other high-tech products.
Last Friday, the President of the United States, Joe Biden, said, "Each of our countries will take steps to reject Russia's status as the most favored and privileged nation."
