Amazon Banned Police's Facial Recognition Technology for One Year!
Amazon said it have imposed a one-year ban on police's use of Rekognition.
"We argued that governments should make stronger arrangements to manage the ethical use of facial recognition technology, and Congress is ready to take on this challenge," Amazon said.
Amazon has announced that it has banned face recognition software for one year from police in response to the killing of George Floyd by a police officer. Amazon used the following statements in its statement:
"We argued that governments should make stronger arrangements to manage the ethical use of facial recognition technology, and it seems Congress is ready to take on this challenge. We think this one-year delay decision will allow enough time to regulate Congress-appropriate rules, and we are willing to help if desired."
While the Supervision and Reform Assembly held some hearings about the use of facial recognition technology, a draft law on technology regulation has not been prepared yet. Jimmy Gomez, who is on the committee, told CNBC that he is hopeful that Congress will prepare a bill this year.
"This is a good first step, but still not enough," said the representative of Amazon, Gomez.
On Monday, Democratic lawmakers announced a comprehensive police reform bill, and on Wednesday the Parliamentary Judicial Committee held hearings on the prevention of police violence.
