Amazon must specify the country of origin of the fruits and vegetables
The US online retailer Amazon must specify the countries of origin of the fruits and vegetables it offers.
A German court ruled on Thursday. The Munich court dismissed Amazon's appeal against the
Munich lower court, which dealt with the same case last year.
According to its decision, in the interests of consumer protection and transparency, the company must publish detailed information on the origin of the products. The case is the result of a lawsuit initiated by the consumer protection association Foodwatch.
According to European Union guidelines, consumers are entitled to specific information about the country of origin of food, said Judge Andreas Müller in the decision.
In practice, this means that Amazon will not be able to sell grapes with thirteen possible countries of origin or mangoes grown in Israel, citing Senegal as the country of origin on its website, according to the German agency dpa.
Amazon said in court that it changed its business practices after the original court decision.
