Biden targets 'excessive' oil profits, denounces Pelosi's attack
President Joe Biden on Friday called the attack on the wife of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi "despicable" and accused those spreading lies about stolen elections of contributing to politically motivated violence and eroding the political climate.
Biden, along with Vice President Kamala Harris, attended a $1 million fundraiser in Pennsylvania, targeting oil companies and "big pharma" that make huge profits on the backs of Americans.
"Enough is enough," Biden told supporters in Philadelphia. "Every person of conscience, regardless of your politics, must stand loud and clear against violence in our politics."
"Democracy is on the ballot this year literally, not figuratively," said Biden, who warned of the dangers of extremism in a fiery speech in Philadelphia last month.
Biden said reports indicate that the attack on Paul Pelosi targeted Speaker Pelosi and noted that the hammer-wielding assailant used the same "Where's Nancy" chant heard from supporters of former President Donald Trump who stormed the Capitol on January 6.
Speaking at the Pennsylvania Democratic Party's annual Independence Dinner, Biden said it was not surprising that a party's repeated lies about stolen elections would affect "people who may not be very balanced."
The crowd greeted Biden with a standing ovation, but he received the most enthusiastic cheers when he showed his Phillies socks on stage as a sign of his support for Philadelphia's baseball team on its path to winning the World Series title.
The speech is part of a major push by top Democrats to shore up Pennsylvania Democrats ahead of midterm elections on November 8. Polls show that Democrats could lose control of both houses of Congress, with voter discontent over high inflation disrupting the momentum Democrats had hoped to gain from the fight for abortion rights.
Biden and Harris' visit is the 19th to the critical battleground state of Pennsylvania since Biden took office last year, less than two weeks before Election Day.
