British Airways is considering selling its headquarters building
British Airways is considering selling its headquarters building, as much of the staff moved to their home office during the pandemic. The company will not need so much office space in the future.
Airlines have reported that many employees praise their work from home. It is therefore considering a future combination of work from home and in the workplace.
The relocation of large numbers of employees to work from home over the past year has forced several large British companies to make changes to their office space. For example, Lloyds Bank said it would reduce office space by 20 percent within three years, and another
HSBC bank said it planned to reduce it by up to 40 percent.
In addition, British Airways needs money. They had to significantly reduce costs for the pandemic, which included the loss of about 10,000 jobs. The company has about 30,000 employees left, most of whom, as pilots or flight crew, do not work in offices.
The Waterside building near
Heathrow Airport was completed in 1998 and also serves as the headquarters of IAG, the mother of British Airways. The future of Waterside is also questionable, as the area will have to retreat if Heathrow Airport expands.
