The British budget deficit jumped to its highest level in 28 years in February
The British statistical office said that, Britain's budget deficit increased by more than 17 billion to a record over 19 billion pounds in February.
According to the office, the British budget deficit reached 19.1 billion pounds (22.32 billion euros) in last month. This increased by £ 17.6 billion year-on-year.
The February figure represents the highest budget deficit for a given month since the relevant data were recorded in 1993.
On the other hand, these unfavorable data are also better than analysts expected. They expected the budget deficit to rise to £ 21 billion.
In the 11 months of the current financial year 2020/2021, which began in April, the budget deficit reached £ 278.8 billion. Compared to the 11 months of the previous budget year, it increased by £ 228.1 billion.
Even in 11 months, this is the highest budget deficit since 1993.
The UK's Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) estimates that the
UK budget deficit will reach more than £ 350 billion for the whole financial year (by 31 March).
In the following year, 2021/2022, the budget deficit is expected to fall to £ 234 billion. Even so, however, it will be more than four times higher than the 2019/2020 deficit, which covered only one month affected by the
corona crisis.
