British MPs Demand An Earlier End To Huawei In 5G Networks
The British Parliament has "clear evidence" of the close connection between the Chinese technology company Huawei and the structures of the Communist Party there.
The Defense Committee in the lower house of parliament informed about it on Thursday.
At the same time, MEPs called on the government to set an earlier deadline by which telecommunications operators in the country must remove Chinese company's equipment from 5G networks.
Huawei rejected the conclusions of the parliamentary investigation. According to the company, the report is not "credible and based on opinions instead of facts".
The parliamentary committee claims that the findings are based on testimonies from academics, cyber security experts and informed sources from the telecommunications industry. Among them should be the leaders of Huawei itself, as well as its long-term critics.
According to one quoted source, the Chinese government has invested about $ 75 billion in the company over the past three years, allowing Huawei to sell its products at "ridiculously low prices," according to bbc.com.
The British government has already banned domestic telecommunications operators from purchasing new equipment for 5G networks from Huawei with effect from the beginning of next year. Operators are to remove installed components from a Chinese company by 2027.
The parliamentary committee called on the government to consider postponing the deadline to 2025 in the event that relations with China deteriorated or pressure from the US and other partners so required.
Huawei is the epicenter of a major technology and security dispute between Washington and Beijing.
U.S. officials say Huawei poses a security risk and is lobbying in Europe and other allied countries to avoid its technologies in upgrading telecommunications networks. Huawei denies this claim.
China is trying to encourage European countries to guarantee Chinese telecommunications and technology companies access to their markets.
