Budget Summit of European Union Leaders Has Started

Leaders of 27 European Union member countries met in Brussels to discuss the union's future budget. "The future budget of the EU will be discussed at the summit," said Charles Michel of the EU Council, who made statements to the press at the entrance of the European Union (EU) Leaders Summit. Reminding that he has been in intensive discussions with leaders in recent weeks, Michel said, "There are different expectations and different concerns about the budget. All of these are legitimate. I believe that it is possible to make progress in the next hours or days." '' WE ARE STABLE TO FIND A SOLUTION " German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the extraordinary summit was held to discuss the EU's budget in the next 7 years and said: "We are determined to find a solution on the budget". There are significant differences that member states need to overcome, Merkel said, adding that the budget talks are complex. French President Emmanuel Macron said: "the aim of France is to set a common policy on agriculture." Adding that more work should be done on the budget, Macron said: "I will do everything necessary to secure a deal that protects our interests. There is a possibility of an agreement being reached at this summit." "NEGOTIATIONS ARE JUST BEGINNING" Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin said, "These negotiations are just beginning. The member states are still far from each other. I hope an agreement will be reached in the coming days." "Negotiations are starting, but EU member states are far from each other," Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven said. He explained that Denmark, Austria, the Netherlands, and Sweden are against increasing the contribution to the budget and that the budget should be modernized in order to transfer more financial resources to areas such as digitization and the environment. Expressing that spending can be reduced in compliance and agricultural policies, Löfven said that the budget should have a rule of law mechanism. "WE CAN'T DO MORE WITH LESS" "We cannot do more with less. We need a larger budget for agriculture, compliance and border management policies," Greek Prime Minister Kiryakos Micotakis said. "The budget is not ambitious about security and defense. If you want to be a global player, you have to pay for it," said EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policies. ABOUT BUDGET At the summit, the future budget of the EU will be discussed by the leaders of the member states. The leaders will share their views on the size and spending areas of the Multi-Annual Financial Framework (MFF), which includes the union's budget for the 2021-2027 period. How much the EU's budget for the 2021-2027 period will be in the GNP of the member countries will be discussed. In this context, some Western European countries want the budget to be 1 percent of GNP, while less developed Eastern and Southern European countries demand this rate to be higher. The European Parliament (AP) wants the budget to be increased by up to 1.3 percent of GNP. In budget negotiations of around 1 trillion euros, small percentiles can result in hundreds of billions of euros in total.
