Canada’s Immigration is on the Agenda
Canada's immigration is on the agenda. The country aims to stimulate the economy adversely affected by the epidemic.
The Canadian government has announced that it will increase the number of immigrant admissions in the 3-year period despite the
Coronavirus (Covid-19) epidemic. According to the announcement, Canada will accept more than 1.2 million immigrants in the 3-year period.
The country aims to give permanent residence and work rights to 401 thousand foreign nationals in 2021, 411 thousand in 2022 and 421 thousand in 2023.
In the previous period, the government had aimed to attract 341 thousand immigrants to the country this year, 351 thousand next year and 361 thousand in 2022 in its last three-year plan. Although the exact data have not been disclosed, it is thought that half of the target of 341 thousand people will be reached by the end of the year.
The opposition does not find this goal realistic. Conservative leader Raquel Dancho calls the figures 'pure fantasy' and claims that the government has no plans to bring large numbers of immigrants safely, despite border restrictions and the closure of embassies and offices around the world.
In addition to these, immigrants coming to Canada are said to have an important economic contribution to the country and are seen as an advantage against the country's aging population.
