Citigroup has appointed
Jane Fraser as CEO. This is the first time a woman has been appointed to the
Wall Street giant.
Fraser was elected president of the company in 2019, will replace
Mike Corbat, who will leave Citigroup CEO after 8 years. After this election, Fraser, who was considered to be the “crown prince”, managed the consumer unit of the bank, private banking and Latin American operations during her 16-year tenure.
Mike Corbat played an important role in the near-bankrupt Citigroup's downsizing and steady profitability in the 2008 economic crisis. Nowadays, Fraser has been put to power by increasing revenues, ahead of industry leaders JP Morgan and Chase, and using the bank's global connections despite growing nationalism and trade barriers.
"We have completed our transformation after the financial crisis and have come to life as a simpler, safer and stronger institution," said Mike Corbat. He added that she will take it to the next stage.
