Coinbase Announced That 6,000 Customers' Accounts Were Stolen
Coinbase announced that 6,000 customers' accounts were stolen. It was learned that hackers disabled the SMS verification feature.
Coinbase, one of the most used crypto exchanges in the world, announced that hackers or hackers, who disabled the company's SMS verification security feature, stole cryptocurrencies from at least 6 thousand customers.
In the email sent to affected customers this week by the stock market, which has about 68 million users in more than 100 countries, it was stated that the incident took place between March and May 20, 2021. It was noted that the hacker used a phishing method to seize customers' accounts and steal their cryptocurrencies during this time.
In the statement reached by Bleeping Computer,
Coinbase states that for the attack to occur, the hacker must know the customer's email, password and phone number associated with the Coinbase account, as well as access the customer's email account. It has not yet been determined how the hacker gained access to this information. Besides, there have been numerous phishing campaigns recently aimed at stealing customer account information on cryptocurrency exchanges like Coinbase.
In the statement, it was emphasized that there was no evidence that user information was taken from Coinbase itself. After the incident was noticed, it was noted that the account recovery protocols were updated via SMS.
Coinbase will deposit an amount equal to the value of the stolen cryptocurrencies to the hacked accounts. It was stated that some customers have already been refunded, and the loss of all customers will be covered.
