Crypto Leader Bitcoin's Proposal to Become Legal Tender in Mexico
Mexican Senator Indira Kempis announced that they have registered a bill for Bitcoin to become legal tender in the country.
Last February, Senator Indira Kempis said that Mexico, like El Salvador, should recognize Bitcoin as an official currency, adding that she aims to bring a bill to parliament on the issue.
The senator stated that El Salvador would be an important center for BTC and that he believed that Bitcoin could solve problems in many countries with inequality, including Mexico.
Kempis said,
"If we don't make this decision as soon as possible, as El Salvador did, it may be much more difficult to act later. Steps should be taken to adopt Bitcoin in order for the widespread use of technology to increase financial inclusion."
In Mexico, central bank and finance ministry officials, on the other hand, note that they do not find it appropriate to use cryptocurrencies within the country's financial system.
Finance Minister Arturo Herrera has stated that this policy is unlikely to change in the near future.
Recently, a Bitcoin ATM was installed in Mexico's senate building. In addition, Ricardo Salinas Pliego, one of the richest Mexicans, is one of the biggest supporters of Bitcoin. While Banco Azteca, founded by Pliego, started working to accept Bitcoin, the country's central bank made a statement that Bitcoin was prohibited from being used in the financial system. After this statement, Banco Azteca's Bitcoin plan was also put on hold for a while.
