E-Commerce Record Is Expected in Turkey on Mother's Day
An e-commerce record is expected in Turkey on Mother's Day. Due to complete lockdown, purchases take place on the internet.
Record sales are expected in
e-commerce, as Mother's Day, which is celebrated on the second Sunday of May every year, coincides with the full lockdown measure this year.
Sinan Öncel, Chairman of the
United Brands Association (BMD), spoke to the AA correspondent on the issue.
Stating that Mother's Day will be celebrated for the second time in the shadow of the epidemic, Öncel said, “If we do not live in the same house, we will not be able to visit our mothers and kiss their hands due to the complete lockdown. We will order our gifts from shopping sites or online marketplaces and send them.”
This Will Contribute 30 Percent on Average to Retail Sales
Sinan Öncel stated that jewelry, accessories, ready-to-wear and electronic products are mostly preferred as gifts for mothers and said, "We can say that there will be a similar distribution this year. From our experiences and observations in previous years, we know that the Mother's Day shopping made an average of 30 percent contribution to retail turnover. In some categories this ratio approaches 100 percent."
Reminding that Mother's Day and Eid al-Fitr coincide consecutively this year, Öncel continued as follows:
"After Mother's Day on May 9, Ramadan Feast will begin on May 13th. As shopping malls and street stores are closed due to epidemic measures, online channels seem to be almost the only option for gift shopping. Therefore, we expect a serious increase in e-commerce in the coming days. Last year, with the impact of Mother's Day and Ramadan Feast shopping, the online shopping record was broken.According to the Interbank Card Center (BKM) data, the share of online card payments in total card payments increased to over 25 percent in May 2020. We estimate that the rate will increase even more this year, that is, a new record may come."
Gift Purchase Should Be Done Early
Stating that there were serious problems in the delivery of online orders during the lockdown period last year, Öncel said that the logistics network expanded within a year, and on the other hand, 5-6 thousand people were included in the system under the name of "tradesman courier".
Öncel recommended that those who plan to buy gifts for Mother's Day and the holiday should make their decisions as soon as possible in order to avoid unpleasant surprises.
