The European Central Bank (ECB) is working to introduce a digital version of the euro. The plan will be the subject of a public consultation with citizens, academics and bankers, the ECB said on Friday. According to the statement, the institution must be prepared to put digital money into circulation if the situation in a changing world so requires. According to the bank, a specific decision has not yet been made. The digital version of the common currency is also not intended to replace cash payments, but only to supplement them. Consultations will begin on 12 October. "The euro belongs to Europeans and our mission is to be its administrator. Europeans are increasingly using digital currencies in their spending, saving and investment. Our task is to ensure confidence in the value of money. This means making the euro ready for the digital age. We should be ready to introduce the digital euro if necessary, "said ECB President Christine Lagarde. The digital euro should be distinguished from other bitcoin-like cryptocurrencies by the fact that, unlike private investors, it will be officially administered by the central bank. This increases trust, reduces risk and is likely to reduce management costs. According to available information, the digital euro could be used without an internet connection.
