ETUC Published Its Own Proposal For A Directive On Equal Pay For Women And Men

On Wednesday, the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) published its own proposal for a directive on equal pay for women and men. The trade unionists did so in protest against the legislative delay of the European Commission (EC). The ETUC noted that it had taken this unusual step - the publication of its own directive on salary transparency - in protest against the delay of the EC, which was originally scheduled to publish its proposal on Wednesday on the occasion of the European Equal Pay Day. Trade unionists recalled that EC head Ursula von der Leyen had promised to take binding measures on salary transparency during the first 100 days of her term, which did not happen 339 days after taking office. This means that nothing has changed in the legislation as women earn on average 16% less in their EU countries than their male counterparts. The Commission stated that it would not have time to present this legislative initiative before 15 December. The European Trade Union Confederation has commissioned European labor law experts to draw up solid legislation in this area, which can also inspire the European Commission. The measures proposed by the ETUC call for a ban on confidentiality clauses in employment contracts so that workers can discuss remuneration; release of information on job evaluation in order to determine equal pay for work of equal value; audits by employers on remuneration information and annual action plans on equal pay and support for trade unions in negotiating with employers to address the pay gap. European trade unionists published their model legislation a month after the ETUC revealed that women in the EU will have to wait until 2104 to receive the same salaries as men if the current pace of change in this area does not accelerate. "It is sad that the same pay is on the agenda of the European Commission, despite the fact that women make up the majority of the workforce facing the Covid-19 epidemic in underpaid jobs such as patient care and cleaning. We ask von der Leyen to "On European Equal Pay Day, it reaffirmed its promised pay transparency law so that European women would not have to wait for the same pay until the next century," Esther Lynch, Deputy Secretary-General of the ETUC, said in a media report.
