TikTok, the video sharing application downloaded 43 million times in the country, was banned on the grounds that it could not control "inappropriate content".
Pakistani regulatory authorities took action to ban the practice in the country on the grounds that TikTok could not control immoral and inappropriate content.
The TikTok app, developed by China-based technology giant ByteDance, has 43 million downloads in Pakistan. According to data published by SensorTower, the app was downloaded 14.7 million this year alone in the country. This makes Pakistan the twelfth largest market
TikTok has.
TikTok's spokesperson stated that the company frequently met with Pakistani officials and deleted any content that violates their policies in all markets where they operate.
According to the transparency report published by the company, TikTok deleted 6.5 million videos in Pakistan between the first month of 2020 and June. The same report also includes information that the Pakistani government made four requests from TikTok for forty users and different content. However, only two of these accounts are seen as deleted or restricted.
Pakistan, one of China's close allies, has also been included among the countries taking measures against the practice. Over the summer, India banned TikTok across the country along with other China-based apps. Indonesia, Egypt and Bangladesh are among the countries that impose restrictions on TikTok.
