From 2028, Opel only wants to build electric cars
The car manufacturer Opel plans to only offer electric cars in Europe from 2028. The Opel boss Michael Lohscheller announced at the electric car day of the parent company Stellantis. The traditional brand from Rüsselsheim also wants to enter the world's most important car market, China, with its range of electric cars. "We will reinvent the Manta in the middle of the decade," said Lohscheller. The cult car of the past century is to be resurrected as an electric version.
The Franco-Italian car company
Stellantis plans to invest more than 30 billion euros in electric cars and hybrid models by 2025. By then, almost all of the Group's models should be electrified, explained CEO Carlos Tavares.
The e-cars should have a range of up to 800 kilometers, according to Tavares. According to the company, from 2026 onwards, car users will not have to pay more for an electric car than for a conventional car with a combustion engine. Possible government support is excluded from this calculation.
The Opel parent company wants to generate more than 70 percent of its sales in Europe with so-called low-emission vehicles by 2030. In the US it should be more than 40 percent. For this, the second largest European car company wants to build five battery factories. "The transformation phase is a wonderful opportunity to reset the clock and start a new race," said Tavares.
Stellantis was created at the beginning of the year from the merger of the French PSA group with Fiat Chrysler. The group, with strong footholds in Europe and North America, has 14 brands, including
Peugeot, Fiat, Dodge and Opel.
