Greece Has Announced Arms Purchases

Amid tensions with Turkey in the eastern Mediterranean, Greece has announced arms purchases and an increase in armed forces. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said his country would order frigates and helicopters in addition to 18 French Rafale fighter jets. In addition, 15,000 new soldiers should be hired and the national defense industry should be strengthened. Meanwhile, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned against "messing with the Turkish people". Mitsotakis said that Turkey was "threatening" Europe's eastern border and "undermining" regional security. The armament initiative should also create thousands of jobs. Further details are to be announced today at a press conference, it said from government circles. "Oruc Reis" back in Turkey Meanwhile, the Turkish research ship "Oruc Reis" returned to the Turkish port of Antalya on Sunday night after the internationally controversial exploration of natural gas deposits in the eastern Mediterranean. Greece welcomed the end of the research.

Dispute over gas reserves in the Mediterranean

Since the discovery of rich gas reserves in the eastern Mediterranean, Ankara has been fighting over their exploitation with Greece and Cyprus. The NATO partners Turkey and Greece have reinforced their claim by sending warships. France has increased its naval presence in the eastern Mediterranean in support of Greece.
Meanwhile, Turkish President Erdogan once again issued warnings to France. Macron shouldn't "mess" with Turkey, Erdogan said in a televised address in Istanbul. Macron called on Ankara on Thursday not to cross "red lines" in the conflict in the eastern Mediterranean. Erdogan also urged Greece to "stay away from wrong" actions.

USA also warn Turkey

During talks in Cyprus, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called on Turkey to suspend its activities in the Eastern Mediterranean. "We remain deeply concerned about Turkey's ongoing natural resource exploration operations in areas over which Greece and Cyprus claim jurisdiction," said Pompeo after meeting with the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades and Foreign Minister Nicos Christodoulides . "Heightened military tensions do not help anyone but opponents who want a split in transatlantic unity," said Pompeo. He called on all sides to pursue diplomatic solutions.
