IMF Expect The Global Economic Recovery Will Be Partial And Uneven In 2021
The world economy is in a slightly better position than four months ago. A large number of countries have been coping with the effects of the coronavirus pandemic crisis faster than expected in recent weeks. This was stated on Tuesday by the head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Kristalina Georgieva. The IMF continues to expect that the global economic recovery will be partial and uneven in 2021, and a return to crisis cannot be ruled out.
Unprecedented government action has taken to stabilize, adopting stimulus programs totaling about $ 12 trillion, Georgieva said. They have also helped millions of companies around the world survive extremely relaxed central bank policies.
On the one hand, the measures prevented an even steeper economic downturn, but at the same time deepened inequalities between rich and poor countries, Georgieva warned in a video message ahead of next week's joint meeting of the IMF and the World Bank (WB).
One of the key topics of the meeting will be the question of how to help poor countries pay their debts. The head of the IMF calls for rich countries to provide poorer countries with more grants instead of loans.
In some cases, debt restructuring will be needed, which will require the involvement of rich countries as well as private creditors, Georgieva concluded.
