Fed Chairman Jerome Powell noted that the US economy is starting to recover, but there is still a long way to go for a full recovery due to the epidemic. Powell reiterated his view that more fiscal and monetary incentives are needed to prevent the health crisis from causing long-term damage to the economy.
Japanese stocks displayed a sales-weighted outlook after the holiday return. The index also lost value in South Korea.
Australian stocks increased. The Central Bank of New Zealand left the interest rates unchanged at 0.25 percent.
