Internet companies should pay more in taxes, Macron told a meeting of leaders of the OECD
Internet companies should pay more in taxes, French President Emmanuel Macron told a meeting of leaders of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
"We need fair taxation," Macron said, without naming specific companies, but meaning companies like Facebook and Google.
He pointed out how the new coronavirus pandemic has helped speed up digitization, as many people are now looking for ways to do the work and other tasks that once required human contact.
This means an increase in profits, which, however, did not lead to a corresponding increase in tax payments. According to
Macron, many taxpayers will no longer accept this status quo.
The OECD has long sought to come up with an international solution to the so-called digital tax. However, pandemics as well as political disagreements disrupted the schedule of this process.
Macron added that it was necessary to agree within the
OECD on a proposal for tax reform by mid-2021.
France introduced the digital tax in 2019, but did not implement it as it waited for the outcome of international negotiations. The United States has warned France to retaliate if it implements its plan.
