Letter from Elon Musk to the Pentagon
Elon Musk sent a letter to the US Department of Defense. Elon Musk, CEO of the American space transportation company SpaceX, stated that he contacted the Pentagon about the Strarlink satellite-based communication service he provided to Ukraine.
"I can confirm that the department has been in contact with SpaceX about Starlink," Pentagon Deputy Spokesperson Sabrina Singh said at a press conference.
Sabrina Singh, who did not include the details of the correspondence between the Pentagon and SpaceX, stated that there is no aid package to be announced yet to pay SpaceX for Starlink service on behalf of Ukraine.
"The Department has identified with the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense the need for a permanent SATCOM (satellite communications center) to help Ukrainian forces easily make contact and maintain stable communications. We are working with our partners and allies to look at all options for how we can best support the needs of Ukrainians," Singh added.
Elon Musk noted on his social media account that the Starlink service they provide to Ukraine for free is worth $80 million and will exceed $100 million by the end of the year.
In his letter, the company stated that it could not provide more terminals to Ukraine and could not cover the costs of the existing terminals, and asked the Pentagon to pay on behalf of Ukraine.
Tension between Musk and Ukraine's Ambassador to Berlin
In addition, a veiled argument between Musk and Ukraine's Ambassador to Berlin Melnyk Andrij on Twitter allegedly led Musk to demand the costs of the Starlink communication service provided by his company to Ukraine.
