Norwegian Air Shuttle is canceling long-haul flights
Norwegian airline Norwegian Air Shuttle has announced that it will focus on European destinations and stop long-haul flights as it struggles with the effects of the coronavirus pandemic and debt restructuring. "Under these circumstances, long-haul flights are not viable for Norwegian Air and therefore these activities will not continue," the airline said on Thursday.
The plan affects the company's flights to the US and means that it will reduce its fleet from 140 to about 50 aircraft. Back in November,
Norwegian Air Shuttle announced that it was seeking restructuring and protection from creditors in
Ireland, where its fleet is located, saying it was in the interests of its shareholders.
In early November, the airline said it was facing a "very uncertain" future after the Norwegian government rejected its request for additional financial support. The government said the carrier had financial problems before the pandemic and that aid should focus on healthy companies first.
