Norwegian Government Intervenes in Strike by Energy Sector Workers

Norway's Ministry of Labor has called off a strike by energy sector workers, fearing it would worsen Europe's energy crisis.

The Norwegian government intervened urgently in the strike by oil and gas workers. The Norwegian Labor Ministry's decision was driven by concerns that it would worsen the energy crisis in Europe. "When the dispute can have such huge social consequences for the whole of Europe, I have no choice but to intervene," said Labor Minister Marte Mjös Persen. Iudun Ingvartsen, the head of the Lederne union, where oil and gas workers are organized, confirmed that the strike was ended by the government's decision and underlined that the workers will return to work as soon as possible. These developments have raised expectations of increased gas supplies from Norway. According to the statements recorded by the Norwegian Oil and Gas Association, the unions representing the majority of energy workers in the country decided to go on strike because they could not reach a common decision on the salaries paid and resorted to strike action to demand an increase in their salaries. The strike led to an increase in gas prices. It reduced gas supplies to the UK and most of the European continent, with gas prices hitting a four-month high. The Norwegian government has the authority to intervene in labor disputes under certain conditions. the Financial Times reported that the strike was expected to reduce Norway's gas production about 60 percent by the end of the week.
